Anyway, on to the lucky part. As we were leaving for Chicago, my sister was arriving home from a fabulous trip to Africa where her family and the in laws went on a safari. Today my sister gave me a big bag of beads from there. You can see them in the photos below. And now you know why I'm feeling so lucky!
The top beads appear to be wood, and I'm not sure about the red beads, maybe glass or ceramic. And there's a huge strand of quartz beads, more wood beads, some brass beads, and those white beads are very light weight--not sure what they are. At first I thought the aqua beads were recycled beads but they actually feel like plastic. Still they are a great color. And the green beads on the left--I'm just not sure about them. They feel a bit cool to the touch making me think they are glass. They have a rustic color and feel.
I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun with those. They are such a lovely assortment!
ReplyDeleteWow, lucky you!! Those beads are gorgeous. I especially like the cream colored wood beads.

The red beads are called green hearts because of the. green center, They're trade beads that are over 100 years old. How lucky you were to get a new stash additions,
ReplyDeleteand I meant to add that they are glass, probably made in Italy and then traded.
ReplyDeleteI want a twin! Lucky you! Have fun designing with your new beads.
ReplyDeleteOh lucky you! There was an African jewelry store where I used to live. Loved that place!
ReplyDeleteI forgot, being a Kansan you may know the place! Africa(n) Adorned in Lawrence, KS.
ReplyDeleteThose look fantastic, can't wait to see what you do with them
ReplyDeleteWhat great gifts -- a chance to see your sister on a regular basis, and the beautiful beads you got!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to have a sister who brings home beads! They are gorgeous! Possibly the litle green ones are from recycled bottles? Love the red ones!!

Nice! I think the red ones are bauxite--the same type I showed on my blog that my friend gave me 10 years ago from Ghana. I actually see many of the same types of beads in your lot!
ReplyDeleteDid you ever happen to be affiliated with the Kansas Twin Association, or go to any of the twin conventions during the 80s? If so, you may know my mother and aunt; they were very involved and presidents of it or something.
There's an African jewelry store in Lawrence? darn!!!
